The World Bank has contracted a consortium of organizations led by Practical Action to conduct a study in Madagascar to assess the potential economic, environmental and health benefits of ethanol as a fuel. Berkeley Air, as a part of this consortium, has been contracted by the World Bank to conduct indoor air quality and health status monitoring.
The study is evaluating the effects of household ethanol use in comparison to the two most common domestic fuels: charcoal and fuel wood. In addition to testing the efficacy of ethanol stoves, the study also aims to assess the effects of awareness-raising and other promotional activities designed to address the harmful impacts of exposure to cooking smoke. With the exception of the control group, all study households have experienced some awareness-raising activities, and some households have only received awareness-raising.
